Sandstone: A clastic sedimentary rock composed of sand-size grains of mineral, rock or organic material.
What is Sandstone?
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock that is typically composed of sand-sized grains of mineral, rock or other organic materials. In addition to these sand-sized grains, sandstone also contains a cementing material that binds the grains together, making it one. It can also contain a matrix of silt or clay size particles which occupy the spaces between the sand grains.
Sandstone is by far one of the most common types of sedimentary rocks – used for many applications around the world. It is commonly used as a construction material and as a raw material in manufacturing. Many suppliers such as London Stone offer a wide range of sandstone slabs for people to choose from, allowing for people to completely transform their homes and gardens easily.
The word “sand” in sandstone refers to the particle size one grains (as stated earlier), as opposed to the material of which it is composed. These sand-sized particles range from 1/16millimeter to 2millimetres in diameter.
Weathering & Transportation
The grains in sandstone are generally particles of mineral, rock or other organic material which have been reduced to small particles through being weathered and transported to their depositional site by the moving of water, wind or ice. The further these materials travel the more sand like the grain appear. Some of these, the ones which are too large to be used are further reduced in sized physically by man.
Sandstone is available in many different types, enabling for people who’re looking for it to choose from colour, texture and so much more. Just some of the sandstone types available for example include autumn brown, kandla grey, mint sandstone, raj green, tumbled mint, tumbled raj green, tumbled kandla grey, tumbled black, beige sawn sandstone, harvest sawn, buss sawn sandstone and contemporary grey. This array doesn’t even touch the edges though, there are plenty of styles available and choices perfect for all individuals and applications.
